When Healthcare Hurts: Supporting Colleagues Through Grief
Presenters: Hui-wen Sato MSN, MPH, RN, CCRN, Hadley Bloomhardt, MD, and Sarah Eastland Tremallo, MSW, LICSW
We are humans doing some of the most human work in pediatric nursing. We play a key role in the stories of our patients’ illness journeys, and our own stories are inevitably shaped along the way. In this webinar, we will discuss the oft-neglected reality of our experience with grief as healthcare workers. We will identify common barriers to healthy processing of our grief in the healthcare context, and discuss practical ways to support one another through grief in both the short- and long-term. Attendees will have an opportunity to explore their own stories and reflect on the hard and beautiful aspects of doing this work.
Outcome: 85% of participants will be able to incorporate strategies to process grief and support into their practice based on the knowledge gained in the webinar

- This session describes a quality improvement project aimed to decrease CLABSIs on a hematology/oncology unit using improvement science to identify and break down the problem, analyze root causes and implement countermeasures (tests of change). Bathing compliance was identified as a key issue and after examining root causes, we implemented an innovative role, Hygiene Tech, to assist with baths and linen changes, improving our bathing compliance rate by 11.2%, to 96%.
Outcome: 85% of the participants will self-report having gained new knowledge and/or strategies to implement into practice based on the information provided.

- This project tested pre-printed, color-coded labels in pediatric ICUs to improve medication safety. Learn how color-coded labels verses handwritten labels enhanced nurse confidence and perceptions of patient safety. This session will highlight the positive outcomes from pre- and post-intervention surveys and discuss recommendations for broader application and further research.
